Software Engineer

One of the personal websites of all time.

Does it smell in here or is that just me?

Hello, World!

Thank you for stopping by and welcome to my personal site! It’s constantly under construction, so please excuse the mess.

If you have some time, feel free to look through pictures of myself, my partner, our dog Momo, and our cat Appa. ☺️

About

Hi there! My name is Huy. I’m a software engineer based in Austin, TX who enjoys tackling challenging problems and learning new technologies. I pride myself on being adaptable and a jack-of-all-trades, always eager to grow my skillset.

Over the years, I’ve been at companies of different shapes and sizes. My experience spans being a technical leader, managing cloud infrastructure, full-stack engineering, and working on everything from developer platforms to data pipelines. I’m comfortable with Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Terraform, Kubernetes, and a wide range of DevOps and data engineering tools. I like to collaborate across teams, mentor and be mentored, and make sure that systems are reliable, scalable, and secure.

In my side projects, I try to solve problems that scratch a personal itch or combines with a hobby. When I’m not coding, you might find me volunteering, playing disc golf, basketball, or tennis, or getting into a good board/card/video game. I also love reading, crocheting, collecting pins, and exploring new places and adventuring.

OPTCG Top 8 Generator

An image generation application for the One Piece Trading Card Game to create visually appealing tournament results with clear and concise information! Created as a passion project for one of my favorite hobbies and being unsatisfied with the current offerings.

Built with Python and JavaScript. Image generation done with Python Imaging Library (PIL), object detection and image parsing with Python-tesseract (Tesseract-OCR), automatic leader scraping with BeautifulSoup, jQuery and Bootstrap for simplicity and consistent UI/UX, Firestore and Cloud Run functions for data analysis and stats, and deployed with Kubernetes on Google Cloud.

Goodish

A news aggregator that displays articles from RSS feeds. Inspired by the website StumbleUpon, I wanted to have a place to see good news amidst all the bad we're bombarded with. The world isn't perfect and neither are we, but we can all be goodish every day.

Built with React, TypeScript, and Vite. Deployed on Cloudflare Pages. Right now it does simple fetches from curated RSS feeds. Future improvement is to do sentiment analysis on a wide range of articles, tag them accordingly, then serve positive ones to the user based on topic and interest.

Watermarkn't

A watermark removal tool for images. I developed this as a side project for my own personal use, not intended for financial or commercial use.

Originally built with Python, the current iteration uses JavaScript and WebAssembly to run in the browser and is deployed on Cloudflare Workers. It detects watermarks and attempts to remove them while keeping the underlying image unaffected using naive inpainting. Unfortunately, watermark removal is difficult and the best ones use deep learning and AI tools to accomplish it which I'm not currently doing.

Destroying the One Ring

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who, above all else, desire power. But they were, all of them, deceived, for another ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a Master Ring, to control all others. And into this ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One Ring to rule them all!
